Police investigate fatal car crash in Citrus Heights

One person died in a three-car crash in Citrus Heights Saturday afternoon.

According to the Sacramento County Coroner's website, the man was 25-year-old Travis Chapman.

Two other people were taken to a nearby hospital to get treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The crash happened on northbound Sunrise Boulevard, near Highland Avenue, around noon, Citrus Heights police spokesperson Bryan Fritsch said.

"Preliminary investigation suggests the drivers collided into a large tree as it fell onto the roadway," Fritsch said in a news release.

One of the vehicles then crashed into a utility pole and overturned.

It is unclear what caused the crash, but Fritsch says it was wet and rainy at the time of the crash.

Investigators at the scene said there is a lot of debris on the road because part of the oak tree was toppled over the crash site.

Police shut down Sunrise Boulevard between Sayonara Drive and Locher Way as officers investigated the scene. The road reopened around 8 p.m. Saturday night.
