Ozy the pug surfs for a purpose

Meet Ozy the surfing pug! He is a regular at the Surf Extreme in Elk Grove. The 3-year-old dog has been catching waves since he could walk.

"I think he had no idea what was going on, but he just followed me on the board," said Ozy’s human Mari Jo Andres. Ozy needs a little help catching the wave, but once he finds his balance, he becomes one with the water.

The water below Ozy is moving at about 30 miles-per-hour. If you are wondering, yes, the pup has wiped out.

“He has learned not to fall but he gets back on the board again,” Andres said.

Ozy likes the water but he really surfs for his favorite treats: baby carrots. He's preparing for a surfing competition this weekend hosted by the Lucy Pet Foundation, a mobile spay and neuter clinic.

The clinic will be rolling through Stockton this weekend, looking for a dog who can ride a surf board in their mobile wave machine. If Ozy is good enough, he will get to ride in the mobile wave truck at the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

All Stockton area pet parents can bring their dogs to audition on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Carter’s Pet Mart on W. March Lane.

The Lucy Pet Foundation's Wave Maker is a 75-foot-long tractor-trailer, filled with 5,000 gallons of water. It too will be making appearances in Northern and Southern California, before it makes its way to Pasadena on Jan. 2 at the Rose Parade.
