Carmichael woman wakes up to find car in backyard pool

A car crashed into the backyard pool of a Carmichael home early Thursday morning.

Homeowner Judith Andre, whose backyard is at the corner of Dewey Drive and Winding Way, heard a noise around 4 a.m., but did not get up because she thought the sound came from the other side of her fence.

"I just laid there for a while," Andre said. "And then when I finally got up, my neighbor called me and said I had a hole in my fence."

Around 9:40 a.m., she then reported the crash to California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer Chad Hertzell said no one was reported injured in the crash. As officers started pulling the car from the pool, three teenage girls came up to the car; one of the girls was associated with the car, Hertzell said.

During the preliminary investigation, officers found that the teenage girl took her mom's car to a party with her friends. According to the CHP, the girl claimed her guy friends took the car, but officers said she was not being cooperative with authorities on the details of what happened.

Neighbors said they saw officers retrieve a bottle of alcohol from the car, but the CHP has not confirmed that alcohol was the cause of the crash. Hertzell said officers found a purse and a hypodermic needle inside of the car.

Hertzell said the girl's her mom was going to report the car stolen because she didn't know her daughter took the car.

The identity of the driver and passengers is unknown. The CHP continues to investigate the crash.
