Late Sacramento Bishop on way to becoming Saint

Former Auxiliary Bishop to the Sacramento Diocese, Alphonse Gallegos, has been recognized as venerable by the Roman Catholic Church.

A ceremony was held Saturday, November 19 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament honoring the late bishop.

Gallegos served the Church for more than 30 years. He spent a decade in Sacramento as Auxiliary Bishop unitl his death in 1991.

Gallegos was struck and killed a by a car when he stopped to help a stranded driver.

In July, Pope Francis issued a decree that Gallegos be recognized as venerable, the first step in becoming a Saint.

If cannonized, he would be the first American born latino recognized by the Church.
