SACRAMENTO — A suspect is still on the loose after shooting at a police officer outside the Capitol Casino early Sunday morning.

According to officer Matthew McPhail, PIO for the Sacramento Police Department, while attempting to break-up a fight between two groups of men in the parking lot of the casino, one of the men opened fire. The officer discharged his weapon and started shooting at the suspect, who eventually fled the scene. The officer was not hurt, however, a bystander in the parking lot was struck by gunfire. The victim, a 36-year-old male, is at an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

This is an ongoing investigation. The officer involved is a 20-year veteran. He has been placed on paid administrated leave while the shooting is investigated.

 SACRAMENTO — One person is dead after an early morning shooting in South Sacramento.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department was called to the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 44th Avenue around 1 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the upper torso on the sidewalk. He was soon pronounced dead at the scene. 

The identity of the 48-year-old victim has not yet been released. There is no known suspect description or motive at this time.
