A traffic stop turned violent Monday when a passenger exited the suspect car with a firearm and pointed it at an officer in Lodi.
Lodi police stopped the car on a traffic violation around 8:20 a.m. Monday near Pleasant Avenue and Turner Road, police said.
During the stop, a passenger in the backseat began showing signs of suspicious behavior, prompting the officer to call for backup, police said.
Eventually the passenger, later identified as parolee Matthew David Palaita, 35, exited the car and pointed a gun at one of the officers, which prompted police to open fire on the suspect, fatally striking him.
Palaita died at the scene despite life saving measures performed by police and emergency medical crews.
The driver of the vehicle was interviewed and released.
The officers involved in the shooting have been with the Lodi Police Department for 4 years. The officers did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
