3 teens killed in fiery wreck following Modesto pursuit

A vehicle crashed after evading police Thursday night, killing three teenagers inside.

The victims were 16 years old and from Modesto.

Modesto police Sgt. David Chamberlain said the pursuit began when officers attempted to pull over a person driving erratically and the driver fled. Officers pursued the car for a short while, but discontinued the chase out of concern for public safety.

Police searched the area for the vehicle and found it on Miller Avenue where it had crashed into a tree and caught fire.

The first officer on the scene pulled a passenger out of the rear seat. Other arriving officers broke out the windows and were able to get the passenger out of the front seat. The two passengers were taken to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Officers were unable to pull the driver from the burning wreckage. When Modesto firefighters contained the flames, they eventually removed the driver's body from the charred vehicle.

An ensuing investigation determined the car was stolen, but had not been reported stolen at the time of the pursuit, Chamberlain said.
