Home invasion suspect fatally shot by home owner; 15-year-old arrested

A man is dead after an alleged home invasion attempt was thwarted by the owner.

The home invasion happened about 20 minutes east of Modesto in Empire, Stanislaus County sheriff’s investigators said.

The night began with deputies investigating an assault involving three male suspects and one female suspect in Oregon Park just before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

While deputies managed to collect information from two victims who had been robbed by five people, the suspects managed to get away.

By about 11:45 p.m., deputies were sent to Campos Place in Empire connected with a reported home invasion, involving a man being shot, deputies said.

Deputies arrived and found a man dead inside the home and a 15-year-old boy being detained by the home owner.

A struggle had ensued inside the home between the home owner and one of the alleged suspects, deputies said. During the struggle, the home owner shot and killed the one of the suspects.

Witnesses told investigators another man and a woman were seen escaping from the home just after the shooting.

The 15-year-old was arrested at the scene, charged with home invasion, robbery and a prior outstanding warrant.

The identity of both the dead suspect has been withheld pending notification of his family.
