Off-duty Ceres police officer involved in fatal shooting

MODESTO - A man is dead after an altercation with an off-duty Ceres police officer.

The fatal shooting took place at Beyer Park in Modesto around 10:21 Sunday night. According to Modesto police spokesperson Heather Graves, the victim was identified as 29-year-old Jason Moland. The officer, who was placed on standard paid administrative leave, was identified as Thomas Miller.

The preliminary investigation showed Miller and a woman were at the park when they were approached by Moland, Graves said. There was a confrontation between the two men and Moland allegedly pointed a gun at Miller. Miller fired his gun, hitting Moland.

Officers responding to a 911 call of a shooting at the park arrived to find Miller performing CPR on Moland. Moland was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, Graves said.

Monday afternoon, the Modesto Police Department released a photo of Moland's gun. It was a BB gun.

Investigators urged anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the Modesto Police Department which is investigating the criminal aspect of the case.

"If they were a witness, definitely call the police department," Graves said.

The Stanislaus District Attorney's Office is also investigating and the Ceres Police Department is also working their own probe.
