Person of interest sought in 'suspicious' Highway 99 rest stop death

SACRAMENTO - Detectives' investigation into a suspicious death at a Highway 99 rest stop last month has led to identification of a person of interest in the case.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said emergency personnel were called to aid 41-year-old Christina Cardoza at the northbound 99 rest stop near Turlock the night of Wednesday, Feb. 26. Cardoza died at the scene and detectives were called to investigate her death.

The sheriff's report said detectives learned Cardoza had been injured earlier in the day near Campbell Boulevard and Winton Parkway in Livingston. It wasn't clear yet if the injury contributed to Cardoza's death.

Meantime, investigators want to talk to a person of interest in connection with Cardoza's death - 64-year-old Cheryl Ruth Liberty of Modesto.

Anyone who can provide information on Liberty's whereabouts was urged to call sheriff's Det. Gregory Buck at (209) 525-7103.
