SACRAMENTO - One person is dead in a small plane crash in Mariposa County, the sheriff's-coroner's office confirmed.
The emergency call came in at 10:10 a.m.
Sheriff's personnel in an aircraft and a California Highway Patrol helicopter crew responded to the scene described as possibly on the 6000 block of Highway 49 near the Mariposa-Yosemite Airport. The downed aircraft was spotted in a rugged area off of Highway 49 about three miles from the airport, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Ian Gregor.
Sheriff's deputies and Search and Rescue personnel arrived at the aircraft at approximately 11:45 a.m. to find the pilot dead.
Gregor said no one else was in the single-engine amateur-built Bowers Fly Baby 1A plane.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating.
