Police 'confident' body discovered is not missing Modesto man

The discovery of a body in Modesto Tuesday night brought police to a farming neighborhood near Claus Road and Merle Avenue.

Police reported the discovery on the Modesto Police Department Facebook page, which raised concerns among readers the body might be that of a man who was reported missing April 1.

While Gary Johnson does remain missing, police quickly responded to the Facebook comments to let readers know investigators were confident the body found was not that of Johnson’s.

While investigators wait for an official cause of death, they were able to report the body found was that of a woman's, said Heather Graves, a spokeswoman for Modesto Police Department.

Johnson, a 74-year-old with dementia, has gone missing in the past. Johnson was reported missing back in January, but was subsequently found the same day.

At this point, however, Johnson does remain missing following the most recent report of his disappearance.

He was last seen in the area of Briggsmore and Lakewood on April 3 around 9 a.m., Graves said.

Johnson was last seen wearing blue jeans, a dark grey shirt with red lettering and a blue baseball hat.
