RENO, Nev. (AP) — An early winter storm has dumped more than 2 feet of snow on the mountains around Lake Tahoe and several inches of rain in the valleys on both sides of the Sierra.

The heavy snow in the mountains and rain in the valleys triggered power outages and school delays at Lake Tahoe and snarled traffic during the morning commute in Reno. The start of school in Incline Village was delayed two hours due to road conditions and a power outage.

The National Weather Service reports 26 inches of snow has fallen on the top of the Mount Rose ski resort southwest of Reno since Wednesday afternoon. The Nevada Highway Patrol responded to more than dozen accidents on slick roads in the Reno-Sparks area early Thursday.

About a foot of snow was reported early Thursday near Incline Village at Lake Tahoe, while nearly 5.5 inches of rain was recorded on the California side of the lake at Tahoe City.

Other rain totals include nearly 3.5 inches at Verdi just west of Reno, 1.7 inches in Cold Springs north of Reno, 1.3 inches in Carson City,  an inch in Gardnerville and about a half inch at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
