The car traveled about 50 yards along the north edge of the school and stopped upside down against the northwest corner of the school, a few feet away from the playground.

The building is a historic one room schoolhouse that was built in 1868 and has been preserved. Today, the building is used as a preschool. Parents said they were grateful no students were in the building at the time of the crash.

"I don't even want to think about what could have happened. It's just really scary," said Peggy Beard, the grandmother of a 4-year-old boy who attends the preschool.

Family members said the man killed was21-year-oldElijah, only sharing his firstname. They saidElijah sometimes suffered seizures.

"I can only think that maybe his foot hit the gas pedal and that's what caused him to go as fast as witness say he did," family friend Nyla Vaivai said.

Friends said Elijah was a responsible person who did not drink and was helping others get through the recent loss of another family member.

"I've never seen a young person who could support somebody in the depths of their grief the way he supported my neice," family friend Darlene Hartway-Young said.
