Mentoring event offers Sacramento businesswomen access to top professionals

SACRAMENTO - In five-minute, one-on-one sessions, more than 40 women sat across a table from other women armed with questions in hopes of gaining insight into what it takes to enjoy a successful career.

It's called "Bizwomen Mentoring Monday,", and I had the opportunity to participate in the Sacramento Business Journal event on April 7, at Sleep Train Arena in Natomas.

Some of the other mentors who participated are top female leaders in our region, including Chancellor Linda Katehi of UC Davis, Sacramento Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby, and Maria Barrs, President and General Manager of News10.

Mentoring Monday was a fantastic and unique opportunity for women in the community to have access to some of the top professional women in our area. Yes, it was all about girl power!

I was impressed by the group of ladies with whom I had a chance to speak. With paper and pen in hand, they were prepared and ready to take advantage of the speed mentoring sessions.

Some of the advice I offered focused on having a strong voice in the workplace, being a leader, and speaking up even if you don't have a popular opinion. I feel In order to do that and be heard and respected by your co-workers, you must set the example. Essentially, leading by example by arriving to work early, staying late, being knowledgeable about your business, and always remembering "please" and "thank you" can go a long way.

For the attendees who organize community events, or for those whose company survives with the public's help, I expressed the importance of having strong relationships with the media. Clearly, we specialize in "getting the word out" to the public. Via email and phone calls, reaching out to local media is key. Coverage isn't guaranteed, but it's certainly worth the effort. Also, I stressed how vital social media is to growing a business, brand or an idea.

Bizwomen Mentoring Monday was hosted in 40 different cities throughout the country on the very same morning.
