Police volunteer becomes first Sonora homicide victim in 13 years

SACRAMENTO – A volunteer with the Sonora Police Department was found fatally shot inside his business Sunday.

According to a report from the Sonora Police Department, officers were called to the property at 280 Marco Way around 11:13 a.m. regarding a man down inside the business. When they arrived, officers found the business owner, Rick Roberts, 49, of Sonora dead inside.

The police investigation determined Roberts had died as a result of a gunshot wound. The case remains under investigation, according to police.

Roberts was a member of the department's Police Associate Citizen's Team (PACT). He was an adviser for the police department's Police Explorer program, helping train Explorers for competitions and chaperoning them on different activities and events. Roberts also assisted the department at its firearms range, police said.

This was the first homicide in the city of Sonora since Feb. 28, 2001, according to police.
