A Rancho Cordova police officer got into an altercation with a suspect on Tuesday which escalated when the man reached for the officer’s handgun.

The officer saw the suspect, later identified as Anthony Rushing, 41, of Sacramento, crossing a street without using a crosswalk, prompting him to confront the suspect.

Upon contact, Rushing took off on foot through the Zinfandel light rail station, police said.

Officers eventually caught up with Rushing at a nearby strip mall, where a “violent confrontation” ensued, according to police.

During the confrontation, Rushing allegedly dropped a knife he was reportedly concealing in his hand, police said.

The officers did not apparently immediately see the knife during the fight. During the struggle Rushing and the officers fell to the ground. Rushing then attempted to remove one of the officer’s handguns from his holster, according to police.

Officers used a Taser to subdue Rushing at which point he was handcuffed and taken into custody. One of the involved officers sustained a minor injury to the side of his face after being punched by Rushing, according to police.

Rushing was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail and charged with resisting arrest, attempting to remove an officer’s firearm and a violation of his probation status.
