Rancho Tehama school officials responded within ‘15 seconds' of shooting

4 killed, suspect dead after shooting in Tehama Co.

A gunman crashed through a fence at Rancho Tehama Elementary School early Tuesday morning, just minutes before school started, and started spraying bullets.

Corning Union Elementary School District Superintendent Rick Fitzpatrick said one student remains in stable condition at Mercy Hospital in Redding.

As of Tuesday afternoon, five people, none of them children, including the alleged shooter, was confirmed dead.

School officials ordered a lockdown after gunfire started and rushed students into classrooms.

“The difference between the lockdown and the shooter being in the quad was about 15 seconds,” said Fitzpatrick. “It was incredibly prompt action.”

The K-5 school, which has about 100 students, does not have any police officers on-site, as the local Sheriff’s Office responds to any crime incidents.

Counselors were at the school today. Rancho Tehama Elementary will be closed at least through Friday, Fitzpatrick said.
