Gunther said police learned Graven and another homeless man, David Waldecker, 24, had been arguing over personal property Waldecker accused Graven of taking from him. Witnesses said Graven pulled a knife on Waldecker and stabbed him in the back. At that point, investigators believe Waldecker and Matthew Russell Alfonso, 29, Ninah Tyneil Winnie, 36, and Joseph Alan Ray Smith, 30, attacked Graven, beating him until he lost consciousness.

Waldecker, Alfonso, Winnie and Smith were arrested last week on suspicion of murder and conspiracy. Gunther said they remain in Placer County Jail on no bail holds and may face other charges with Graven's death.
