Alleged sex offender shot by Sacramento officers

SACRAMENTO - Sacramento police and sheriff's deputies attempting to arrest a suspect wanted on underage sex and child porn allegations shot the man when he tried to run them over, police said.

Authorities said suspect William Herzog, 28, was in critical condition following the shooting in a parking lot at 65th Street and 4th Avenue a little after 5:30 Wednesday evening.

The Sacramento Police Department report says Herzog ignored officers' commands to exit his car and instead accelerated, steering his car toward officers. He reportedly nearly hit one police officer. A police officer and a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy opened fire. Herzog was struck by multiple gunshots and ultimately crashed his vehicle into a patrol car.

A 17-year-old girl in Herzog's car at the time was not hurt.

Police said when Herzog is medically cleared by doctors, he will face assault with a deadly weapon charges in addition to sex acts on a child, unlawful sexual intercourse and possession of obscene matter depicting a person under 14 for which officers were trying to arrest him.
