Co-worker arrested in connection with sexual assault of Subway employee

SACRAMENTO – The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said an arrest was made in connection with a violent sexual assault of Subway restaurant employee Tuesday morning.

Kenneth Chandler Anderson, 22, who worked with the victim at the Auburn Boulevard restaurant, was arrested and booked into Sacramento County Main Jail, Sgt. Lisa Bowman said.

Anderson's and the victim's co-workers are still in shock over this week's sexual assault and the arrest of a man they thought they knew.

"We had customers coming in left and right, hey where's Kenneth at, where's he at, so he was definitely... seemed like a good guy, and customers obviously enjoyed his company," co-worker Adam Dowdy said.

Deputies arrested Anderson Thursday night for the attack on the young woman, who was opening the store early Tuesday morning when she was caught by surprise.

"She obviously was sexually assaulted in many different ways. She was raped in the back room," Bowman said at a news conference Friday morning.

Anderson was booked on four felony charges and a misdemeanor charge related to the attack. He is being held on $1 million bail.

The victim described her attacker as wearing a mask, but investigators immediately wondered if this could be related to a series of rapes in the area beginning last September. In those cases the victims gave specific descriptions of the rapist.

"There is a striking resemblance between this subject that we've arrested and that series," Bowman said.

No one answered the door at Anderson's home in Carmichael. His neighbors couldn't believe the news.

"I had no idea what was going on next door. I just thought they were quiet," one neighbor said about Anderson and his family.

"Actually, he seemed like just a regular guy. He was out here playing basketball with all of his family members," neighbor Shaun Ransom said.

Since the arrest, those who know Anderson are taking a fresh look at sketches of the serial rapist -- sketches that co-workers said were at, one time, displayed at the Subway where Anderson worked.

"When we first put the sketches up, he said, 'wow that looks just like me.' He did mention that," Dowdy said.

At this point, Anderson has only been charged with Tuesday's sexual assault. Investigators said they will have to wait for DNA test results before they can draw any connection to other cases.

Detectives were still investigating the case and asked anyone with information related to Anderson's actions or this investigation to contact the sheriff's department at (916) 874-5070.
