Coroner identifies American River drowning victim

A 28-year-man drowned Friday night in the American River.

The Sacramento County Coroner on Saturday identified the victim as Ernest Perez Surita. Firefighters responding to a call for a water rescue Friday found him on the bottom of the American River.

CPR was performed on Surita as he was transported to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

A fire department battalion chief and a witness told News10 that Surita was trying to swim across the river from Tiscornia Park to Discovery Park. He was found near the Interstate 5 bridge.
