New feature on Starbucks app will allow you to tip baristas, but should you?

Starbucks is adding a new feature to their mobile payment app that will allow customers the option to tip baristas.

Starting next week, customers will be able to leave a tip of 50 cents, $1, or $2 anytime within two hours of the transaction.

This brings up a sensitive topic of tipping workers who are already making more than the minimum wage. Also, depending on what customers order, they could be paying as much as $4 or $5 for a coffee, and feel a tip is not necessary when they're being charged that much.

Others feel that baristas fit right into the category of fast food workers who, unlike waiters and waitresses, are not doing much to earn a tip. It's a debate that has gone on for quite some time.

On the flip side, baristas say their jobs are very difficult and the wages are still low. So they may tell you the tips are well deserved.

Starbucks says the mobile tipping option is in response to customer demand, because customers are not always carrying cash with them.

As for the tips earned through mobile payments, Starbucks said they'll be paid out to workers in cash
