Parents arrested in Sacramento infant's death

SACRAMENTO – A Sacramento couple were arrested after their 3-month-old son died Saturday.

Sacramento Police Department spokesperson Michelle Gigante said firefighters were dispatched to an apartment on the 2900 block of North Meadows Dr. at 6:11 p.m. Thursday in response to a call for medical aid. Responders took Tyrese Smith to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries, but due to his critical condition, rerouted him to UC Davis Medical Center.

Detectives responded to UC Davis and began an investigation into Tyrese's condition, interviewing his mother, Ashleigh Smith, 27, and father Terry Scott, 19. Both were subsequently booked into Sacramento County Jail on felony child abuse/neglect charges Thursday night, Gigante said.

On Saturday morning, Tyrese died as a result of his injuries.

Further charges may be amended or considered pending the investigation and autopsy results, Gigante said. Child Protective Services, Sacramento Police and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office are all participating in the ongoing investigation.

No additional children were found in the home.
