From birth, Kayla Fields’ parents started teaching her the importance of patriotism.

“Since I couldn’t sing, I’d hum the national anthem to her while I rocked her to sleep,” said Kayla's father, Frank Fields.

Now, the 8-year-old Fields is showing her love of country in her own way – by welding flag art meant to honor our nation’s veterans.

“I would like to thank them for their service and for their dedication serving our community, our country and our world,” Fields said.

Fields first learned how to weld at the age of 7, through her local 4-H program. Now, her flag art is earning as much as $500 at auctions.

In addition to welding flag art, Fields and her mother hand out small cards to veterans that they see, thanking them for their service.

Fields says when she grows up, she’d like to be a welder for the U.S. Navy.

“It just makes you feel good. It justifies what we did fighting for our country,” her father said.
