Don't worry: Sacramento parking free for holidays

Though Sacramento's city parking system has gone through some recent changes, one thing that remains unchanged is free parking on the holidays.

Like it or not, September 1 marked the beginning of new parking operating hours in Sacramento. However, the city did not change parking on major holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

The City will offer free parking on weekdays after 4:30 p.m. and all day on weekends starting Nov. 25 through Dec. 25 in midtown and Old Sacramento, according to City of Sacramento officials.

Free meter parking zones will extend from I to L streets, and from Front to 29th streets, and will only apply to metered on-street parking spaces. All other parking violations are still enforceable as posted such as street cleaning and color zones.

The East End Garage located on 17th Street between L Street and Capitol Avenue offers a $2 flat rate after 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and all day on the weekends, excluding second Saturday (Dec. 10).

Here's what the City of Sacramento's website has to say about it.

Meters are not enforced on specific holidays observed by the City of Sacramento holiday schedule. Meter screens will inform motorist that no payment is required on these dates:

  • January 1st
  • Memorial Day
  • July 4th
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

If any of the foregoing days fall on Sunday, the Monday following is a holiday.

City officials also released a map of free holiday parking spaces, too.
