Full demolition for downtown arena starts

Full demolition for the downtown entertainment and sports complex is slated to start Wednesday morning. But as of Tuesday evening, crews were already starting to tear down part of the east side of Downtown Plaza.

The noise from the destruction has already forced one nearby tenant to move out.

Officials at the University of San Francisco - Sacramento campus decided to relocate from 630 K Street to a new building located seven blocks from the construction zone.

School officials said in a written statement: "As an institution of higher learning, USF's first priority must always be providing those solid academic learning and teaching environments. We had to be realistic about how this construction might affect our ability to provide such an atmosphere conducive for the USF Sacramento Community."

The construction noise has not kept spectators from stopping by and snapping pictures.

"We're so excited about what's happening here with the new arena coming," said Tony Wall, who works at an office building off Capitol Mall.

"We wanted to take a couple before and after pictures to see the progress," Sacramento resident Ashley Grant said.

The construction forced Grant and his family to park further away from Century Theaters, a slight inconvenience they were okay with.

"It can't be perfect down here, but maybe like an extra 10 minute of a walk," Grant said.

Other businesses in the area said they are willing to put up with the dust and noise because they know they will be reaping the benefits when the arena opens and attracts more business.

Demolition will begin Wednesday morning at 515 L St. Web cams will live stream various vantage points of the demolition on the ESC website. Check out http://sacramentoesc.com/live/ to watch the demolition.
