Golden 1 Center work program seeks underprivileged youth

The Sacramento Kings will be using the new Golden 1 Center as an opportunity to give underprivileged teens and young people a pathway to a career. June 2, 2016

Low-income people in their teens and early 20s will get a chance to jumpstart their careers at the Golden 1 Center, thanks to a new partnership announced by the Sacramento Kings this week.

The Kings and Legends Hospitality, the company managing the Golden 1 Center’s food and beverage services, will be partnering with Juma Ventures. Juma is a non-profit organization that provides underprivileged young people with workforce training and job placement at major sports arenas, including AT&T Park in San Francisco.

When the Golden 1 Center opens in October, Juma will employ 60 young people at food and beverage stations throughout the arena. Participants in the program will also get access to tutoring, college prep and other training programs.

“Hard work and a fair shot are the building blocks of a prosperous future,” Kings President Chris Granger said in a statement.

Sacramento City Councilmember Jay Schenirer, who helped facilitate the Juma-Kings partnership, says the program is part of the Sacramento Kings’ mission to make an impact on the city of Sacramento.

“The profile of these young people is people who want to work and need job skills and are looking for a career – possibly a career in hospitality,” Schenirer said. “This will be a great start.”

Sacramentans ages 16 to 24 can email sacramento@juma.org if they’re interested in participating in the Juma program.

Organizations such as the Sacramento Employment and Training Agency (SETA), FutureReady, the Children’s Law Center, WayUp Sacramento and 3Strands will also be involved in selecting participants.

Schenirer says he eventually hopes to see the Juma program at the Golden 1 Center expand to employ 80 to 100 young people.
