'Highly intoxicated' mom arrested

UPDATE JULY 2, 2014: Theresa Brown is facing two misdemeanor charges: corporal injury on spouse or cohabitant and having care/custody of child – endangering health of child, according to a spokesperson for the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. If she completes 12 anger management sessions the charges will be dismissed, the district attorney's spokesperson said.

A woman police described as "highly intoxicated" was arrested Tuesday morning in Sacramento by officers conducting a welfare check on a child that was said to be left alone.

Theresa Brown's 1-year-old baby was found covered in blankets on a bed at about 1:30 a.m. in an apartment in the 3300 block of Smoke Tree Drive, Sacramento police said. Brown was in the living room.

Officers outside the apartment had heard the baby crying and had knocked on the door. When their knocks were not answered, they entered through an unlocked window.

Brown was taken to Sacramento County Jail. Information on the charges she is facing was not immediately available.

The baby was given to a family member.
