Investigators are still determining whether speeding or racing had anything to do with what they are describing as a double fatal collision that happened early Sunday morning in Sacramento County.
California Highway Patrol arrived just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday westbound along Highway 50 just east of Mather Field Road in Rancho Cordova after the crash and found an abandoned Honda Accord, according to CHP.
Witnesses told investigators the Accord was racing with another unknown car at a high rate of speed, when it appeared the driver lost control of the car, sending it spinning toward the right shoulder. As the Accord continued across lanes of traffic, it was broadsided by Hyundai Santa Fe, CHP investigators said.
The impact of the collision killed the woman passenger on impact, according to investigators. Somehow, the driver was ejected from the car, according to investigator, and landed in another lane of traffic, where he was stuck by another car, killing him on impact.
CHP closed all but one of the westbound lanes along 50 at one point as crews and investigators worked to clear the scene.
