Metro firefighters conduct holiday fire scenario training

The Metro Fire Department of Sacramento conducted a series of real-life training exercises in Carmichael Thursday.

While the department trained on a wide variety of things necessary for the job, firefighters also conducted a series of drills related to types of fires that happen during the holidays.

Firefighters simulated how easy a Christmas tree can catch fire by candles or a fireplace. The department is stressing the importance of maintain a safe distance between your tree and open flames.

The months of December through March are the busiest for firefighters, said Captain Chris Vestal with Metro Fire. Vestal also says his department responds most to electrical fires and holiday related fires including those involving cooking during the month of December.

Firefighters are also urging folks not to overload electrical circuits and not to repair broken cords or cables with tape.
