Nonprofits, Sacramento Republic FC look to voters for funding

Leaders with Sacramento Republic FC, the Sacramento Zoo, the B Street Theater, American River Parkway Foundation and other causes are all looking to generate more money.

The group hopes to get a new a proposal to raise the Sacramento County sales tax 1/8 cent, which is about $15 a person, on the November ballot, and then get taxpayers to approve the proposal.

The organizations will split that revenue, and the Sacramento Republic FC also see a portion of the funds. According to the proposal, the soccer team would only get the money, which is $3 million a year, if they became a MLS team. Their money would go to building a new stadium. The maximum amount the team would receive is $30 million.

Currently, work is being done to build a temporary home for the team at Cal Expo. Sacramento Republic released a statement saying in part:

"Although the proposal is still in its early stages, the idea of dedicating a small percentage of the funding towards a sports and recreation center that may also serve as a soccer stadium, would take us one step closer to MLS as well as create a gathering place for thousands of families in the region."
