Pair gets life sentences for Sacramento home invasion murder

Two men who killed a Sacramento man during a home invasion robbery nearly five years received life sentences without parole in a Sacramento court on Friday.

The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office announced Elias Garcia and Roman Hooker were sentenced for the murder of 47-year-old Donald Kirby at his V Street apartment on Nov. 9, 2009.

According to D.A. spokesperson Shelly Orio, in February, a Sacramento Superior Court jury convicted the pair of first-degree murder and a special circumstance allegation the murder took place during robbery.

Court documents state Garcia and Hooker went to the victim's home with the intent of robbing him because Garcia knew him and thought he would be an easy target. When Kirby opened the door, he saw a semi-automatic gun and tried to shut the door but was shot in the head first. As Garcia and Hooker ran from the scene, Garcia was overheard to say he had to shoot the victim because the entry went bad.

Garcia and Hooker were arrested a year after the crime.
