Police say suicidal man on light rail train fatally shot after lunging at officers

SACRAMENTO - An investigation is underway into an officer-involved shooting that happened on a light rail train Saturday night. The shooting happened in the area of 13th and Q streets. The suspect shot on the train by officers died after 10:30 p.m.

Officials said around 9:15 p.m., police responded to reports of a suicidal man with a knife on a light rail train.

Police had the train stop at 13th and Q streets andtTwo officers boarded the train and confronted the suspect.

"The suspect was still on the train. They contacted the suspect. They tasered him. They ended up shooting the suspect," said Sacramento Police Department officer Michelle Gigante.

Gigante said the man, who was armed with a knife, was not cooperating with police so they tasered him. He then lunged at them with his knife, forcing them to take action-opening fire.

The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injures. He died a short while later.

No one else on the train was hurt. Police are interviewing witnesses.

The identity of the man has not been released yet. Police said he's a man in his 50's.

Because of the investigation, there were some delays on the light rail service. Several roads in the area were shut down. Regional Transit worked on alternate routes and transportation for passengers.
