'Station Link' program aims to make local commuting easier

Uber, Lyft and Yellow cab have come together announcing a partnership with the Sacramento Regional Transit District for a new program geared toward affordable consumer transit.

This Station Link program allows people, with the use of the promo code SACRT, the ability to take any of these three ride options to or from any of the six eligible light rail stations. The stations include Roseville Road, Franklin, Florin, Watt/Manlove, Power Inn and Sunrise.

An added incentive for using this method is that passengers can receive up to $5 off their first 10 rides for Uber, Lyft and Yellow Cab, with the Regional Transit subsidizing that up to $5 amount.

Once your 10 rides are used, it doesn't replenish and the payment goes back to normal without the promotion code.

The companies involved do not know if this promotion is just a one-time deal or not, and depending on its success, whether it could become an option in the future.

"We will keep this option open," said Henry Li, executive director/CEO of the Sacramento Regional Transit District. "Depending how successful this will be, we'll start to discuss on what is the best direction moving forward."

For the three ride-sharing companies though, the manner in which payment happens will pretty much stay the same for passengers and drivers.

"The price is still determined by time and distance," said Chelsea Harrison, senior policy communications manager for Lyft. "The driver will receive their usual percentage of the total fare before the $5 is taken out using the code."

While this is currently the only promotion the companies have together, there are plenty more deals to be aware of to save money using the Regional Transit.

With the Golden One Center in mind there are new promotions specifically catered for the arena.

An individual light rail or bus ticket, for ages 19 to 61, is $2.75 and is valid for 90 minutes only on the light rail. Now if the 90 minutes expires, then like the bus, another ticket must be purchased making the two-way trip cost $5.50.

"A group of up to four people, can [now] ride the light rail and bus together with just one pass for $14 for the entire day," Li said.

For four people, the individual cost totals $22, so each person is saving $2 in the process.

This discount is good to use on any day, not just for events at the arena. All it needs is to be to and from one of the six key stations.

The first season home game with a Golden One ticket will be free light rail and bus rides on Oct. 27. Also, the light rail is going to have up to 10 free ride days over the next 10 to 12 months.

The ridership turnout using light rail has already begun with about 10,000 trips being taken for the Kings game on Saturday and the trend should continue.

"We're clean, we're safe, we're fun and it's convenient." said Devra Selenis, acting VP of communications and partnerships of the Sacramento Regional District Transit District.
