UPDATE: Injured, ill pit bull improving; owner hasn't claimed her

SACRAMENTO - A pit bull brought to Sacramento Animal Care Services in bad shape is on the mend.

Faith, as shelter manager Gina Knepp has learned is the name of the dog, was found by a Good Samaritan in the area of Del Paso Boulevard and Verano Street in North Sacramento on Wednesday. The hurt dog had wandered into a convenience store. The left side of her face had numerous puncture wounds; she suffered from an abscess and an ear infection.

Veterinary care and attention have made a dramatic improvement, as the accompanying pictures of Faith taken on Friday show.

Knepp said Faith is very loving and gets along well even with other dogs. She guesstimated Faith was around 3 years old and had had at least two litters, one in the last several months. Faith is underweight and her ears had not been professional cropped, Knepp said.

Faith's owner, who is a dog breeder, has talked to Knepp. Knepp said she requested the pit bull's vaccination and veterinary care records but the owner has not responded.

The shelter will continue to care for Faith until the owner does or does not claim his dog. Kenpp said she hopes Faith will be available for adoption.
