A San Francisco police officer was critically injured after being shot in the head while responding to reports of a mentally disturbed person. The officer is expected to survive.
San Francisco Police spokeswoman Officer Giselle Talkoff says officers were responding Friday night to the Lakeshore Shopping Center on a call about a man causing a disturbance and threatening people.
Talkoff says that when the officers made contact with the suspect he fired multiple shots, striking the officer in the head.
She says officers fired shots at the suspect as he fled. He went down but wouldn't drop the gun and refused to surrender. Police distracted him with flash-bang grenades and were able to arrest him. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Talkoff says the wounded officer, who was not identified, is in critical condition. He is conscious and with his family members.
