Police are saying the shooting of a two-year-old boy and the attempted shooting on police in Vallejo are connected.
On Sunday, Suisun City Police Department officers were called to the 1000 block of Canary Court after receiving the call of a toddler suffering from a gunshot wound. A person of interest left before police arrived on the scene. Police originally thought the incident was an, “accidental self-inflicted” gunshot wound.
Later that day, around 9 p.m., a man carrying an assault weapon and wearing body armor was shot by Vallejo police after he attempted to ambush two officers inside a Starbucks.
According to a press release from the Vallejo Police Department, just before 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, an adult, black male walked into the Starbucks at 199 Lincoln Road and pointed an assault weapon at two officers. When it appeared the gun malfunctioned, the two officers drew their weapons as the suspect fled on foot.
At a press conference, Vallejo police confirmed the man involved in the attempted Vallejo attack was the toddler's father. As of now, police believe the gunshot wound the boy received was accidental, but they are looking into all possibilities of the incident.
Vallejo Police Chief Andrew Bidou said the gunman who confronted two officers at a Starbucks targeted the pair minutes after casing the coffee shop. Officers were on a coffee break when the suspect appeared in the doorway of the shop and "attempted to assassinate" them.
Police confirmed the suspect as Adam Powell. Bidou said the 41-year-old suspect is the father of a 2-year-old boy who may have accidentally shot himself earlier Sunday in nearby Suisun City. Police say Powell left the Suisin City home when they responded to the shooting of his two year old. Powell is in critical condition.
