Car torn in half; 3 year old in child car seat survives, driver dies

Authorities have released the name of the driver killed in a crash Sunday that mangled his car but in which a 3-year-old child survived.

The California Highway Patrol says 27-year-old Addison Leonard Avila was behind the wheel of a Honda Accord that slammed into a tree on the side of northbound Highway 99 near the Florin Road exit about 12:25 Sunday afternoon. Witnesses told responding officers they saw the Honda speeding and making sweeping lane changes before the driver lost control and spun off the road into the tree.

The impact ripped the Honda in half and sent the rear end of the car north of the demolished front end, the CHP said.

Emergency responders pronounced Avila dead at the scene. They found the child in the back half of the car, still strapped in a child car seat attached to the rear seat. The child had moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for care.
