Man arrested in Sacramento group home murder

SACRAMENTO - Wednesday afternoon, Sacramento police detectives announced they arrested 28-year-old Matthew Drake for the murder of a woman in her 30s in a home on Matson Drive.

Police officers responded to the 2100 block of Matson Drive around 8:19 p.m. Tuesday following a report of a woman bleeding and in need of medical aid. Officers determined the woman had been assaulted inside the group home where she lived.

The victim's identity has not been released.

The victim's roommate, Michele Howe, learned what happened from police. Howe said she was sleeping in her room Tuesday night during the attack and didn't hear anything. She said another roommate made the gruesome discovery.

"He got up, went to ask for cigarettes, he was out of cigarettes," Howe said. "He saw the door open and saw her, closed the door and called whoever he needed to call."

Howe says where she lives is a room and board house for mental health patients, and five people lived in the home, including the victim.

A preliminary investigation revealed the woman had been struck with a blunt object, leading to fatal injuries. Detectives believe the woman knew Drake.

Detectives say they think Drake changed his clothes after the incident and were asking residents to look for bloody clothes that may be in area trash cans.

Drake's arrest follows a history of violence. In 2007, Drake plead no contest to assault with a deadly weapon; a judge sentenced him to 5 years probation and less than a year in prison. In 2009, he plead no contest to battery charges. His history also includes additional felony charges for burglary and grand theft.
