Man with ax causes temporary lockdown of Sutter Middle School

SACRAMENTO - A man reportedly armed with an ax caused a temporary lock down of Sutter Middle School in Sacramento on Friday morning.

Anthony Smith, 44, is in police custody on a weapons charge and resisting officers.

The incident occurred at the 3000 block of K Street, several blocks from the school, which was placed on lock down as a precaution. Sacramento Police spokesman Doug Morse said no one from the school was involved, and the staff and students were not in any immediate danger.

Police received a call about a man acting suspicious and who appeared to be delusional armed with a hatchet a little before 9 a.m. Morse said Smith ran from the first responding officers, which is what caused the lock down. Two K9 officers arrived and helped restrain Smith.

The school was notified to lift the lock down soon after.

Smith was treated at a local hospital for injuries he received during his arrest, and remains in police custody.
