1 killed by Stockton CHP officer

A person was shot and killed by a California Highway Patrol officer in Stockton Saturday afternoon.

CHP responded to a reckless driver call east of Highway 99 in north Stockton, Officer James Smith said. When officers found the driver near E. Foppiano Lane and Oneto Road, the truck had crashed into some brush.

Officers approached the driver, who then presented a weapon at the officers, Smith said. The officers then fired at the driver and fatally wounded the subject. Smith said the officers performed life saving measures, but when medics arrived at the scene, the driver was pronounced dead.

No other information about the driver has been released.

Smith said the investigation is ongoing. Witnesses are still being interviewed and evidence is being collected at the scene.

More information will be available later Saturday night.
