A high-speed chase involving robbery suspects led to a serious crash and two fatalities in Stockton Tuesday, according to the Stockton Police Department.
Officer Joseph Silva with the Stockton Police Department says at approximately 10:45 a.m., the department received a report of a person in a vehicle brandishing a weapon near Hammer Lane and Holman Road in Stockton. At the same time, police received reports from the Lodi Police Department of an armed robbery that occurred at a Costco.
"There was a customer who left Costco, a female customer and the suspects tried to take her purse. The female did not give up her purse and when the suspects hit back in their vehicle to leave, they actually collided with another vehicle there in Lodi in the parking lot," said Silva.
The robbery suspects' vehicle and plates were a match with the brandishing vehicle in Stockton, police say.
Maria Torres was driving on Hammer Lane near Pacific Avenue when the pursuit found her.
"I just look at the car. It was driving next to me. He was driving very fast, like 100 miles (per hour). I don't know," said Torres.
Upon locating the vehicle, officers attempted to make the occupants exit the car. The suspects did not comply and fled the scene.
A small chase followed with the suspects' vehicle crashing into a bicyclist and three other cars at Hammer Lane and Alexandria Place near Stuart Gibbons Park.
The suspects' vehicle rolled over and two occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant was placed into custody and taken to an area hospital. The bicyclist and occupants of three other vehicles involved were treated at the scene or transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No names or ages of the suspects have been released.
