Dad saves daughter from attempted kidnapping at Stockton birthday party

STOCKTON - A Stockton father came to his daughter's rescue on her birthday Saturday.

Police say Gerald Childs, 33, tried kidnapping three young girls at a birthday party when one of the victim's dad stepped in.

The 11-year-old girl was celebrating her birthday with dozens of her friends outside a Stockton apartment complex Saturday evening when a stranger crashed the party.

Witnesses say Childs jumped over the apartment fence and began growling at the guests. "He looked like he had already had an altercation because he had blood on his shirt already and he was real dirty," neighbor Adrianna Hernandez said.

Authorities say Childs then approached the birthday girl and grabbed her.

"I was scared because he was trying to put her on her back and she was kicking, screaming," said Hernandez.

"He was trying to pull me away but I pulled myself away," said the 11-year-old victim.

Once she was able to free herself from the assailant, she ran into her apartment.

The attack did not stop there. The suspect tried grabbing two more girls. "That's when my dad came outside and started hitting him and they all ran inside," said one of the victims.

The confrontation between the victim's dad and the suspect became heated but Childs took off running.

The father chased the suspect down the street, wrestled him to the ground and detained him inside a Hawaiian BBQ restaurant while he waited for police to arrive. A courageous act the birthday girl says she will never forget.

"I feel good for my dad. He was trying to help us out. I just didn't want him to get hurt," said the girl.

Childs faces multiple counts of attempted kidnapping, and annoying or molesting a child.

He is currently being held in the San Joaquin County Jail on a three-hundred, seventy-three thousand dollar bond. Childs is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
