Stockton firefighters put up fence to protect memorial from vandals

After a monument in Stockton honoring fallen firefighters continued to be vandalized, Stockton Firefighters Local 456 decided the best way to protect it was to fence it.

A chain link fence was put around the monument on Thursday after several incidences of theft, vandalism and graffiti.

"We are deeply saddened that it has come to this; knowing that the fence lessens the beauty of honor of the monument," the department said in a Facebook post. "But we have to protect this hollowed ground."

The department said the fence is a temporary solution until something more permanent to protect the monument can be put into place.
