Stockton teen killed in drive-by shooting

Police are asking for the public's help after a teenage father and husband was gunned down Saturday night.

Investigators said 17-year-old Alexis Sanchez was fatally wounded at about 11 p.m. outside a convenience store on the corner of Market and E streets. He was a passenger in a car that was shot at by gunmen in an SUV.

The driver of the victim's car realized his cousin had been shot and drove to a nearby home in the 2300 block of East Lindsay Street where he was able to call for help. Officers found Sanchez in the passenger seat suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the young man dead.

Investigators have released surveillance video they said shows the moment Sanchez was shot.

"Everything indicates that whoever was inside that SUV targeted our victims's vehicle for some reason," Stockton Police Officer Joseph Silva said.

But that reason isn't clear. At this point investigators have no motive for the crime.

"We know in that neighborhood though, it is known for robberies and narcotic activity, but detectives do not believe that either of the victims were involved in any of that type of activity," Silva said.

Family members said Sanchez had a wife and six-month-old daughter, and they couldn't understand why anyone would want to hurt the teen.

Sanchez had recently moved back to the area. Relatives said he grew up in Stockton but had been living in Mexico for the last few years where he met his wife and had his daughter. He had only been back in town for about two months when a short trip to get a bite to eat turned fatal.

Now investigators hope someone will recognize the SUV in the surveillance video to help identify the suspects.

Stockton police urge anyone who was in that area of Market and E streets at 11:15 p.m. Saturday or anyone who has any information about this crime to contact them. Rewards of up to $10,000 are offered for information leading to an arrest.
