Suspect in CHP officer's death due in court Monday

A Sacramento man believed to be part of the pursuit that resulted in the death of California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer Lucas Chellew is expected in court Monday.

Alberto Morales Quiroz, 26, remains in the Sacramento County jail on $575,000 bail after he was arrested Feb. 23 for his alleged connection in the chase.

A settlement conference for Quiroz is scheduled for Monday at 8:30 a.m. in Sacramento County Superior Court.

He faces three felony charges -- buying or receiving stolen property, theft and unlawful driving of a vehicle and evading a peace officer causing injury or death.

Officers believe Quiroz was riding the motorcycle Chellew pursued eastbound on Fruitridge Road Feb. 22. During the chase, a collision occurred and Chellew lost control of his motorcycle. He died from his injuries at about 6:11 p.m. Feb. 22.

The 31-year-old Chellew was assigned to CHP's South Sacramento Area Office.
