Target will soon compete with Walmart and Amazon on speedy deliveries.
The retail giant announced this week its acquisition of Shipt, a same-day delivery company. The service will be available at about half of Target stores beginning early 2018 and will expand to nearly all Target stores by the 2018 holiday season.
At first, the retailer will offer same-day delivery of groceries, essentials, home, electronics and other products, according to John Mulligan, Target’s COO.
By the end of 2019, Target will offer same-day delivery on all the major product categories.
Shipt is already a membership-based grocery marketplace operating in 72 markets, that allows customers to place online orders for fresh groceries and household essentials. Shipt shoppers pick out customer items and the same shopper delivers it to customer doorsteps the same day. The idea is for customers to receive a personalized experience from start to finish.
The same concept will apply to Target products and delivery.
Shipt will be a wholly owned Target subsidiary, and will continue to run its business independently from their current offices in Birmingham and San Francisco.
Target guests can start visiting Shipt.com starting next spring to see if the service is available in their area. The service will cost customers an annual fee of $99.
