The streets of West Sacramento were filled with cops Wednesday night, but they weren't looking for people on Santa's naughty list.
In a holiday tradition more than a decade old, West Sac PD handed out toys to more than 400 kids in need.
It started with a toy drive at the West Sac Walmart several weeks ago. Then city staff members wrapped the hundreds of gifts.
Families in need submitted applications, and on Wednesday, volunteers with West Sac PD and Yolo County Dispatch delivered some joy.
"It's really touching to see some of these kids come out and greet the officers. I mean, it's not all the time that it's under these set of circumstances. A lot of times we're there because it's not good news," West Sac PD Sgt. Roger Kinney said. "This time it's different. The kids see us, we're going to show up and we're going to give big smiles and hugs and toys and warm clothing, which is really important, too."
Altogether, about 150 West Sac families are receiving gifts. Officers brought along extra toys Wednesday evening, to give to kids they encountered who had not signed up for the program.
