Woman killed in collision in normally quiet Sacramento neighborhood

SACRAMENTO - What police described as a "violent collision" claimed the life of a woman in a Sacramento neighborhood Thursday.

The woman was behind the wheel of a gray Toyota when police said it was struck on the driver's side by a black Mercedes in the intersection of Riverside Boulevard and 4th Avenue.

The woman, described as in her 60s, was transported to UC Davis Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries, an officer on scene said. Her passenger, a man in his 60s, was also injured and taken to the hospital as was the man driving the Mercedes. Police did not know the severity of their injuries.

According to their preliminary investigation, police said it appeared the Mercedes was traveling at excessive speed. The mangled cars and debris suggested the force of the impact sent the cars a ways down Riverside.
